BINIBABES ISSUE 28: BRYONY DEERY

This week we grab a cosy corner with Bryony Deery - wellness entrepreneur & Founder of online Pilates studio, Pilates by Bryony. We chat to Bryony about her early months as a mama & how Pilates has stayed at the heart of her pregnancy and recovery.

Tell us about your family...

I'm Bryony, Founder of Pilates by Bryony, Co-Founder of Cloudcha Matcha and host of the Beyond The Mat podcast. I'm such a big believer in the power that small daily rituals having a huge impact on our health and wellbeing. My husband and I recently moved to Spain from Denmark & now split our time between here & London. We're incredibly excited to be growing our little family here, it's such a special and family focused place.

You recently gave birth to your daughter Elle, had you already decided on her name ahead of the birth?

Yes actually pretty much since day one we had a name. We are very decisive and it felt very us and timeless.

What has helped you the most since she arrived?

Having a routine with Elle has been such a help. We go on a 45-minute walk every day. Copenhagen was freezing, so in the early days that was a bit of a challenge, but my BINIBAMBA buggy mitts definitely made it much more doable!

Also, it might sound a bit basic, but having my family, friends, and of course my community around me is such a big support. I feel really lucky to have them and to get help while going through this time.

How did you find continuing Pilates throughout your pregnancy?

I definitely had energised days and more challenging ones, I listened more closely to my body and mind than ever before and it was very humbling to say the least haha.

"

It was a wild ride! A constant mix of gratitude of course and learning to move with my growing body and change in hormones and energy levels.

How can Pilates help women during pregnancy & post‑partum?

Hugely valuable, physically and emotionally. In pregnancy, Pilates helps you build functional strength where you need it most: glutes, upper back, and the deep core system (diaphragm, pelvic floor, and deep abdominals) through breath-led movement. It supports posture as your centre of gravity changes, eases common aches (hips and lower back), and offers an amazing way to connect to your changing body.

Post‑partum, gentle breathwork and gradual re‑loading can help reconnect you to your core and pelvic floor, support recovery from diastasis recti, and rebuild stamina for daily life. The key is patience and progression, starting with breath, mobility, and light activation, then layering in strength. (Always follow your midwife/doctor’s guidance.)

What advice would you give to a newly pregnant mama who wants to start Pilates?

Get the green light from your care provider.

Focus on breath first—360° breathing  is a game changer.

Prioritise form over intensity.

Strengthen what supports you now: glutes, upper back, and gentle core.

Use props and modify as you go; every week can feel different.

If you’re brand new to Pilates, start with our shorter sessions (10–20 minutes) per trimester and build gradually.

You recently spent time living in Copenhagen. How did you find the transition to a new city?

Copenhagen is so calm but you also have a big restaurant and cafe scene that you can dip in and out of too. It’s always an adjustment moving countries but the quality of life here is really amazing and the slower pace has made it feel like home quickly.

"

There’s a beautiful emphasis on balance and time outdoors.

What are your fave city spots so far?

There are so many! Studio X and Bottega Barlie are my favourites for breakfast, Sing Tehus for matcha, and bar amore for a nice atmosphere and good Italian food for dinner. You also have to try the burgers from Popl!

What traits would you like to inspire in Elle?

We always say kindness, confidence and independence are the most important traits.

Beauty product you swear by

Nicoya body balm and oil were my go-to's during pregnancy and I love all things Refy and Dior for makeup.

What is your top tired mama tip?

Saying no without guilt, early nights, short walks for fresh air, legs‑up‑the‑wall, magnesium baths, and protein and fibre rich food. Breathwork and Pilates has saved me through this and made me feel more me than anything else.
